| About eWrapper 2.0 |
|
What is eWrapper? It's a utility to prepare and clean up text for plain text email newsletters. It "wraps" the text at a specified width so that your readers can read the newsletter more easily, no matter what e-mail software they are using. eWrapper will also remove extra characters from the beginning of each line of text, such as the forwarding characters (> |). Text can be copied from another program, such as a web browser, word processor, or email program, and pasted into eWrapper. This paragraph is an example of a paragraph that has been "fixed up" using eWrapper. It is shown in a Courier font, which has equal spacing for all characters. The text in this paragraph is wrapped to 60 characters per line, as an example. If you wanted to generate versions of this paragraph wrapped to 40, 50, and 70 characters using a word processor, it might take 15 minutes to figure that out. With eWrapper, you can do this in about 20 seconds! How is this done? By dragging the slider, you can adjust the number of characters per line. You can also select the infinity character (sideways 8), to take text that is already wrapped and "unwrap" it so that it suitable for pasting into a word processor. Once the correct setting is selected, you must click on "Copy Wrapped Text" in order to copy what is in the preview box. Once the text is copied, you can then go into any program, such as an e-mail editor, and paste the cleaned up text. You can also read our new help file here. Who created eWrapper? eWrapper is a free software program created by Organizers' Collaborative (OC). Organizers' Collaborative is also known for creating the Organizers Database software program. OC is a non-profit organization established to further the potential of computers and the Internet to increase communication and collaboration among those working for social change. You can find out more about Organizers' Collaborative at www.organizerscollaborative.org. Version 1 was created by Rich Cowan and Michael Suarez. Version 2 programming was done by Tina Thomas, with some design work by Cathi Greenwood. eWrapper was written in Visual Basic, and is an "open source", free software program copyrighted under the Free Software Foundation's General Public License. This means that the source code needed for making changes is available (see below)! You may also take the program (it's quite small) and "port" it to another operating system -- if you are a programmer! But you may not redistribute a program based on eWrapper source without making the source code for your modified version available. |

To use eWrapper, just click on the link below,
save the setup program to your hard drive
and then open up the setup program.
Please note: if you think that you might have the "MS-VB5"
libraries in your system folder, you can try to use the "lite" version of
the installation utility (the second link), a much faster download. Try the 'Lite' Installer (106 KB) |

| If you are a computer programmer and you want to view or modify the source code to eWrapper, which was written in Visual Basic, then click below. We'd especially like to see a Mac version! The graphics and the Nullsoft Scriptable Install System version 1.98 script are now included with the source. |

At Organizers' Collaborative, we want to know what you think of
the eWrapper utility. Please let us know if it is useful to you,
as we will post suggestions here so that volunteer programmers may
contribute improved versions of this software. You can contact us at:
oc2005 @ organizerscollaborative.org. Please also note that if you are a Mac user you might try a Mac/Windows program that costs $19.95 called TextSoap. Thanks to Steven Kobasa for letting us know about this software program. |
